Fencing and Gates

In 2000 I decided to take my haunt out of the garage and into the yard. Along with my tombstones and horseman I needed something to make it appealing as a graveyard, so I needed some gates... With the help of my father we built a couple pillars and and matching gates with a slight gothic touch. To match the gates we built a fence to finish off the yard.

The fencing that we built was based on directions by Scott Messinger. Follow this link to get his instruction on how to build a great graveyard fence. Screamin Scott's Cemetery Fence

Step 1:

Build the Pillars
This is pretty much up to you to decide what to do. To fit our needs we built the pillars with hinges so that we could collapse them to save space. Ours are 5 ft tall with two plywood sides and two foamboard sides.

Step 2:

Construction of the gates isn't too difficult. The diagram below will show you what sizes to cut your PVC and what joints to use to make your connections. Do the bent bar last. To bend it insert it into the connectors, prop it against a wall and heat it with a blowtorch, be careful not to burn it though.

Step 3:

Now what we need to do is to make our vertical bars. I took a permanent marker and marked my spacing on the bottom horizontal. I had 5 vertical bars spaced 6 in apart. After you have all of the bottom marks done use a tape measure to mark where you you need to drill holes for the bars. Also while using the tape measure you can also measure how long your vertical bars need to be. When you have all of your marks cut holes using a drill or dremel tool.

Step 4:

Now we need a way to attach the gates to the pillars. What we did was to mount two T's, one at the top edge of the gate and one at the bottom. They are attached to the pillars with long bolts and large washers. The gates are attached by rotating the mounting T's, placing the gates in front of them in, and pushing them into place. Its a slick locking system that also provides creepy squeaky sound. Then whip out a can of spray paint and spray the gates. Then all that is left to do is to paint the rings with acrylic paint and bolt them to the gates.
